On the same day that I realized the Seattle Weekly was memorializing the 20th anniversary of the release of Bleach by Nirvana, I noticed that the Foo Fighters had released their greatest hits compilation. Feeling old, I turned on Television. Not the big box in the middle of my living room. Rather, the 1977 classic recording, Marquee Moon by Television. More than being one of the best albums ever recorded, it represents an important period of my youth. Marquee Moon became one of my favorite albums about the same time that Kurt and Krist and David and Jason Everman (who can forget Jason!) were jamming on the stage at Green River Community College in Auburn, literally months before the famous three were playing sold out world tours.
I’m glad I have lived long enough to see Nirvana remembered in the same way I remembered the Doors when I was in college. I’m even more glad that Marquee Moon kicks ass as well as it did 20 years ago, and as well as it must have in 1977 when it was first released.
