I got to the Metro station this morning and there was a train waiting. Nice. However, that train was packed. Not moving.
“Uh oh,” I thought. Not good. Quickly checking my email, I learned the rest of the story: a cracked rail at Bethesda was causing Red Line delays. Big problem.
About 50 minutes later I arrived at my destination. Yes, I was delayed. I was jostled. I was uncomfortable, especially with the young woman coughing in my face (stay in bed, idiot!). But I got there.
I’m fairly new to DC, arriving just five months ago from the wooly and wild West where we do not enjoy subway service. I have complained some about the Metro, mostly because it seemed like one of the things locals really enjoy doing - watching the Redskins lose and complaining about Metro. But let’s be honest, Metro spotted a cracked rail, started to fix it, and still got me to the office. Well, me and thousands upon thousands of other riders this morning.
No, Metro is not perfect. I remember that everytime I have to walk up a stopped escalator. I think, however, that it does a good job of managing crisis every day.
